why designing your logo in canva might not be the best idea for your business.
Once you’ve started that business the next logical step is creating the logo is one of the first steps towards creating your visual identity. You are probably used to using canva with it’s easy to use interface with thousands if not millions of templates these can be tempting for those just starting out – I get it, it’s a cost-effective solution but maybe it’s not the right approach.
lack of originality
Canva with it’s pre-designed templates are accessible to millions of users worldwide which means hundreds, if not thousands of other people could be using that graphical mark, admittedly the text you put with it might be unique name that works with but it’s hardly unique. Imagine meeting a competitor and sharing designs.
A successful logo should be unique and memorable, which helps you stand out in sea of faces and relying on templates isn’t going to fore fill those goals.
copyright & licensing issue
Canva itself mentions this in its own T&C’s but let’s be honest who reads those? Basically, it says you are allowed any elements for commercial but you don’t own exclusive rights to them. As mentioned above, how can you own right to a graphic that hundreds of thousands of people have also done the same thing? Whilst you might think this is fine because you can’t see yourself looking at copyright, imagine spending time, energy and money on branded marketing materials only to find someone locally has the same logo which underminds your brand’s authenticity and credibility.
limited customisation options
While canva is great at what it does, it does suffer from limited customisations when compared to software that’s designed to do this job, Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer for example. Without those extra tools, you might not be able to fine-tune or do those edits you want to make.
Unless changed if using the free version of Canva, you are limited to what you can access and restricted to the formats you can use. To create a scaleable format to use in print or large-format marketing material you only have access on the PRO account.
in conclusion
Canva is a useful tool and for many projects, it’s the ideal platform to use but when it comes to your logo i think because your logo is the face of your business then think it’s worthwhile seeking experts to deliver something truly unique to you instead of renting a logo from Canva which you don’t own.
